The Classic Heritage Tour

Our most popular tour and highly recommended if you want to experience the very best that Central Otago has to offer. You will stay in beautifully restored 19th and early 20th century heritage accommodation which includes Olivers Lodge of Clyde, The Old Doctor’s Residence in Naseby and The Pukerangi Homestead.
 

Enjoy heritage accommodation in highly rated Qualmark Guest and Hosted, Bed and Breakfast accommodation where you are assured of large comfortable beds, freshly prepared breakfasts, friendly hosts and your own personal facilities. This tour includes a two night stay at The Old Doctor’s Residence in Naseby, winner of the 2010 Central Otago Tourism Award, and could include an exclusive gourmet dinner on one of the nights. You can also choose to add a ‘rest day’ here and have time to explore the Maniototo and experience some of the stunning ‘Things to Do’ and ‘Places to See’.

We will organise all your Rail Trail requirements including reliable bike hire, personal transfers and daily luggage transfers. Your Rail Trail experience could start with a tour of Central Otago Pinot Noir vineyards or a Clutha River Cruise and finish with a trip on the Taieri Gorge Railway to Dunedin … ‘one of the world’s great train trips’. Other highly recommended activities along the trail are curling at Naseby and a 4WD experience to St Bathans or Mt Buster.

Important points to consider

You can cycle the Rail Trail in all seasons, but we do suggest that you cycle from Clyde to Middlemarch and have the benefits of the prevailing wind. Although the Rail Trail is reasonably flat, many cyclists are not fully ‘Rail Trail, mountain bike fit’. They are not prepared for the combination of hills, the sometimes uneven surface … and the wind!
So make an effort to get fit!

When planning your Rail Trail tour remember, that those who take their time are impressed by the stunning landscape, the big sky country, the characters they meet along the way as well as the many interesting ‘Things to Do’ and ‘Places to See’.
