The farmland and broad tussock-covered spaces of the Maniototo Plain are surrounded on all sides by rugged mountain ranges and dominated by the big sky. There are gravel roads and mountain tracks galore which allow for this spectacular land to be explored in 4-wheel drive vehicles.  We can highly recommend a half-day or full day trip into the Syndicate Land of the Ida Ranges and beyond.  You will be driven by an experienced local farmer who will share with you stories and the history of the sheep runs that were first opened up in the 1850’s.  At 4,000 feet you will also explore the prolific gold producing site on Mt Buster where gold was discovered in 1863 not long after the find in Naseby.

The sheep runs along with the gold found in Central Otago, were the basis of New Zealand’s early wealth.  Our guests, especially those from the city or from overseas, have been stunned by the expanse and rugged beauty of this part of Central Otago.
