Central Otago ... First Class
the Luxury Rail Trail Experience

Comments and FAQ

“I wish that we had been told that we might need a rest after 2 full days of cycling.”

Although the Rail Trail is reasonably flat, many cyclists are not fully ‘Rail Trail, mountain bike fit’. They are not prepared for the combination of hills, the sometimes uneven surface and the wind. We suggest you have a rest day in Naseby. You can just relax or take time out to explore the surrounding area.

“We weren’t expecting this. Unbelievable! It would have been better to have had a day or two to explore the Central Otago heartland.”

Naseby is ‘The Jewel in the Maniototo’, right in the heart of Central. It’s an ideal place to base yourself to experience ‘Things to Do’ and explore Places to See. And consider this; you don’t have to cycle the whole of the Rail Trail. There are two ‘highlight’ days on the trail and you can do one or both of these, if you’re based in Naseby. And, you can choose whether to ride uphill or downhill, with or against the wind!

How many people can we have in the group?

Central Otago … First Class specialises in luxury tours for up to 4 people … any age!

What sort of bikes are available?

We arrange your bike hire through Trail Journeys, Cycle Surgery or Shebikeshebikes. All the companies are very professional and will arrange a bike to specially fit you. The bikes are either new or near new and are regularly serviced with lots of gears! Also, your bikes will have panniers attached to them so that you can carry lots of water, your personal effects … and a camera too!

What happens with our luggage?

Your luggage is transferred daily or as required from one bed and breakfast to the next. Both Trail Journeys and Cycle Surgery offer a very reliable luggage transfer service. Generally you are allowed 10 kg per person on the Rail Trail and heavier luggage can be transferred separately from your start point to your finishing point.

What do we do about eating and drinking?

Your breakfasts are freshly prepared by your hosts and will usually include fresh fruit, cereal and yoghurt followed by a choice of cooked goodies.
Although they are not around every corner, there are lots of cafes and pubs along the Rail Trail. We will offer you some suggestions and also recommend places for you to have dinner in the evening. But always remember to have lots of water with you while you’re cycling … it can be hot work and there’s not much shade along the way.

Please note that breakfast is included with your accommodation costs but that we do not include meals or drinks in our pricing.

Also, please let us know about any dietary needs or dislikes anyone in your party has. These can be entered on the ‘Enquiry’ form.

Do we have to share facilities like showers and toilets?

Definitely not! Bathrooms and toilets in all your accommodation will be either ensuited or private.

Can we start from Dunedin / Middlemarch instead of Queenstown / Clyde?

Yes you can, but we do not suggest this option. The prevailing wind will be against you if you start at Middlemarch and the wind is the major factor when cycling in the open spaces of Central Otago … not the hills!

How do we get to and from the Rail Trail?

We will arrange a transfer from Queenstown to Cromwell or Clyde and the Taieri Gorge Railway will transfer you to Dunedin.
